When you move from an apartment to a house it is a big change. You don't understand the real difference until you realize you don't own a lawnmower, or have anything to fill that basement with. Upsizing is always nice but you should be aware of a few items to make your transition go more smoothly.

Lights
Unlike apartments, most houses don’t come with built in light fixtures in every room. Usually only the kitchen and bathrooms already have lights. Be prepared to buy one or two light fixtures so you don’t stub your toe at night.
Utilities
When you live in an apartment, some or all the utilities are included in your monthly fee. Now that you own your own house you have to pay for those all on your own. You’ll need to be more aware of running the tap and turning off lights when you go out. You will need to also set up accounts with the following utility providers:
- Manitoba Hydro
- City of Winnipeg: Water and Waste Department
- Phone and Entertainment ( Shaw Communications, MTS, Bell Canada, Rogers, Telus Mobility )
What to do with that space!
Coming from an 800 square foot apartment to a big three-bedroom house with a basement is going to be a very exciting change. You can create rooms that appeal to you with all that space.
- Entertainment room – with that new TV you wanted
- Kids playroom
- Games room – complete with new pool table
There is no need to rush and buy that pool table though. You may want a games room, but you just bought a house so you probably don’t want to incur any more debt at the moment. Extra space is a good thing – embrace it.
