Pets hold a special place in the hearts of Go Getter. We believe they are an essential member of the family and it's important to look after them during the momove preparation as well as the move itself. As much as we love to get the opportunity to cuddle your fur-baby we also want to ensure they are not injured while we move your belongings. Or worse, make their escape as we go in and out. So Hickory is happy to share some advice on how to make it an exciting and safe event. #HickoryHelps
  1. When moving with pets, ensure all prescription medication and health records are in order. If moving vans are delayed, you may be required to arrange for a kennel stay and having the proper documentation will assist with easy booking at the kennel.
  2. Prepare an overnight kit with food, toys, litter bags, kitty litter, etc. If hotel stays are needed, bring a few extra aluminum cooking pans to use as litter trays in the hotel room.
  3. On moving day, the stress on your pet can be reduced by keeping them in the quietest area possible. If an emptied room or a friend's place is unavailable during loading, you may want to consider a kennel for the day. It's always best to try to maintain a routine that your pet is accustomed to, so make sure they get their walks and free-time as usual.
  4. Your pet will need to familiarize itself with their new home. It is recommended that you move your belongings before you move your pet.
  5. A pet in a new and unfamiliar setting is at a higher risk of getting lost or running away until they feel safe in their new surroundings. Keep a photograph of your pet to show neighbours just in case. Microchips are helpful in locating lost pets as well. Talk to your vet before moving.
  6. Transport your pet in your own vehicle. Bring a favorite blanket or toy to keep them feeling secure and less anxious. You will require a pet carrier if travelling by air. A familiar blanket in the carrier will help reduce their stress level and keep them calm.
  7. Once at your new location, find a local vet and have all your pet's address and health information updated.
  8. Fish, guinea pigs, rabbits, and birds require extra loving care. Fish, for example, are highly sensitive to change. And guinea pigs are known to have particularly vulnerable hearts. Keep them warm and comfortable.
  9. Remember: moving is as stressful for pets as it is for humans. Treat your pet the way you would want to be treated!
